A Game Of Thrones - Genesis

A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a 2011 strategy game developed by Amusement Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive for Microsoft Windows.[1][2] The game is an adaptation of the series of fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin and is the first video game adaptation of the novels. The game takes place over 1,000 years of the fictional history of Westeros, beginning with the arrival of the Rhoynar led by the warrior-queen Nymeria.[3]

A Game of Thrones - Genesis

Bearing no relation to the recent TV show, A Game of Thrones: Genesis delves into a world of politics and backstabbing, and puts less of an emphasis on the tired real-time strategy mechanics seen in so many licensed RTS titles. The world of A Song of Ice and Fire is not one filled with enough epic battles to make for a more traditional strategy game, after all.

As such, despite not being particularly good, fun, and being about as pretty as the Maid of Tarth, A Game of Thrones: Genesis does offer some enjoyment provided you are willing to stick by it and have a couple of friends for multiplayer. You do need to be a pretty hardcore fan of the books to really get the most out of this game, though, and although it might sound cool to relive some of the more iconic wars, on the whole it never rises above mediocrity.

A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a RTS game created by Cyanide Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive on PC. Immerse yourself in the battles and intrigues between the Houses that shaped the Kingdom of Westeros and use any means to win the Iron Throne!

The object of the game is to win the Iron Throne, and that eight of the major houses will be playable and each has at least one special unit and ability. The game is won by building Prestige for your chosen house, which can be accomplished peacefully, by laying waste to your rivals, or anything in between.

  • This game contains examples of: Animal Motifs: As in the novels, most of the great houses have an animal as a symbol of their house.

  • Arranged Marriage: Noble Ladies are sent to allied towns to marry one of the leaders there, which guarantees the city will send back any enemy envoy. If the Lady is murdered, diplomacy can be used again.

  • Bizarre Seasons: Summers can last for years. Winters can last for decades.

  • Dragon Rider: Aegon is a playable unit riding on the back of Balerion the Black Dread. Whether his sisters and descendants will be featured on their dragons has yet to be seen.

  • Horse Archer: The Martell special unit.

  • Instant Messenger Raven: The Targaryen special unit.

  • The Medic: The Tyrell special unit is a maester, who can heal other units.

  • Medieval Stasis: For all 1,000 years, from the looks of it.

  • Musical Assassin: The Tully special unit is a bard which mesmerizes enemy units with their singing.

  • The Mole: Your forces and cities can be corrupted, infiltrated or secretly turned against you by invisible units. These traitors still follow your orders, but everything they do will be fake or actually on behalf of your enemy. It is also the name of the Lannister special unit, which does exactly what the name and trope would suggest.

  • Noble Wolf: The Stark's special unit is a direwolf, which is fiercely protective of the unit it is assigned to.

  • Royals Who Actually Do Something:

  • Violence is the Only Option: Averted. You can win the game through diplomacy and secret pacts, without ever going to war. Assasinations and mercenaries slaughtering peasants do not immediately result in war, but it comes quickly.

It's International George R. R. Martin day today, of course, with the whole world taking a holiday to read his latest book, A Dance With Dragons, which incidentally is a terrible title. So while you're wearing your A Song Of Ice And Fire t-shirt, petting your wolf cub, and waggling swords, you should also check out the new screenshots from Cyanide's game based on the first book, A Game Of Thrones: Genesis.

I'm disappointed that the adaptation is a strategy rather than an RPG, but I'm quite certain you're not. So here are the latest screens of the game. As you might imagine, clicking on them will make them bigger.

"It's the same with the game. It's going to take a certain investment in time to understand all the mechanisms and, no doubt, this will annoy some players. However, once the mechanisms have been mastered, it really will be a fun game.

Written under the supervision of George R.R. Martin, the game takes place before the events of the book and will shed light on some of the lesser known characters and lore of the series. The game covers such events as the awakening of the Others and Nymeria's arrival in Dorne. All told, the game will span 1000 years of history, going as far back as Aegon the Conquerer and as recent as the battles between the Major Houses just before the events of the book.

A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a real time strategy/kingdom development game in the vein of Stronghold. The game is said to emphasize player choice in how to approach any given mission, with different results coming from different play styles. All out war is one option, and although your kingdom may be damaged after the battle, you can still claim victory by occupying the enemy fortresses and towns. But stealth and subterfuge are equally viable. You can choke the enemy's towns out by laying a stranglehold on their economies, or even forge and break alliances with other factions. Or, you can ignore the subtleties of war and launch an all-out attack. In some of the larger battles, you can even command or battle against dragons.

The game is won by gaining a certain amount of Prestige. This is gained by completing challenges or holding titles for fulfilling specific goals. But just as Prestige can be gained, it can be lost in numerous ways as well. Laying siege to towns during a time of peace or having embarrassing secrets publicly revealed are just some of the ways that the rug can be yanked out from under you. In order to win and conquer the kingdom, you will need to balance subtlety and savagery, social strategy and battle tactics.

A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a strategy game in development at Cyanide Studios that takes place in Westeros before the events of the series of books written by George R.R. Martin (now famously translated into a TV series by HBO). The game takes place a whopping 1000 years before Eddard Stark and the rest were born.

At the start of each game, harmony usually reigns. However, every action taken by the players has an effect, be it positive or negative, on the apparent peace. Every killing, assassination, imprisonment and other treachery actions will lead toward War. To the contrary, sending messages of peace to enemy castles (if the envoy manages to reach his destination alive!), freeing captured enemy units, and other actions, will maintain peace. Depending on your strategy and plans, you may want to maintain peace, or to precipitate war.

Sounds like a solid mix of a Warcraft 3-style RTS (hero-based, real-time, tactical combat with units) and a Civilization-style strategy game (building up your kingdom/army, alliances, assasination, marriage), which is certainly something to look forward to.

The first few story missions were fun while you were uncovering the mechanics of how to lie, cheat and steal. Using under-hand methods to undermine your opponent was fun for a while but that aspect of the game is not realised very well.
